Getting Started with Physical Fitness
I’m Alexander Gruezo, Filipino martial arts instructor and fitness coach. If you’re new to fitness or you’re thinking about starting a fitness program, you came to the right page! It contains all the information you need to help you begin a fitness program that is right for you.
Physical Fitness: Our Definition
In order to begin our fitness program, we must first understand what the term fitness really means. There are many different definitions. In my experience what most people are looking for-and what I focus on is:
A process of attaining physical qualities suitable to fulfill a certain role or task.
In other words, you have to ask yourself, “What do I want to be fit for?” Whatever reason it may be, our physical fitness must allow us to get there. We invest time and energy to continually improving, enhancing, and/or maintaining our physical qualities as determined by our goals.
What Fitness Is Not
Let’s dispel some myths and set realistic expectations before we go any deeper.
1. Fitness is not just about lowering body fat levels, gaining strength, increasing flexibility, etc. Lower body fat levels for what? Gain strength for what? Increase flexibility for what? These are the questions we should be asking ourselves. At the moment, my goals are to be strong, fast, and precise for my martial art and to look good in and out of my clothes.
2. Fitness is not just about exercise. This is where most people get it wrong. Many think exercise is the panacea to health, performance, and aesthetic goals. It’s not. This is only one component. Fitness is also about proper nutrition, and optimal rest and recovery. I can’t begin to tell you how much easier it is to reach my goals when I also eat properly and get more sleep.
3. Fitness is not static. If there is one thing I think many people constantly assume, it’s that once you achieve a certain fitness level, that’s it. This is absolutely wrong. Fitness levels still have to be maintained. If goals change, fitness levels have to be adjusted. When I competed in Olympic lifting, there were certain attributes that I focused on, but once that was over, my next goal changed to looking good for the summer. That involved focusing on a totally different set of attributes. Throughout my life I have done different races, played different sports, participated in different competitions, etc. and each and every time my fitness regimen had to change. Even during times I didn’t have specific goals and I had goals of just maintaining, my fitness regimen had to change. Fitness is dynamic.
Components of Physical Fitness: What to Focus On
When you do a search for fitness, you will discover a plethora of information. Unfortunately, most are about different types of fitness programs. All showing you the how, but never really answering the what. And what I mean in this case is not what you are getting fit for, but more what attributes or characteristics are you working on.
So to help you figure out which attributes your fitness regimen should address, here is a list of those components:
- Body Composition
- Muscular Strength
- Muscular Endurance
- Cardiovascular Endurance
- Speed and Quickness
- Balance and Coordination
- Motor Skill
I just wanted to finish by saying I’m here for you, not only as a guide while you begin or continue your fitness regimen, but as a friend.
I do my best to respond to all emails. I’m nobody special. I’m not the strongest, the fastest, or even the leanest person out there. But I am strong for what I want to do, fast for what I want to do, and lean for what I want to do. I love what being on a fitness regimen does and how much it has improved my life and continues to improve my life, especially my martial arts. I just want to use my knowledge and experiences to help improve the lives of everyone that I touch.
Thanks a lot for your support. And if you’ve made it this far please feel free to follow me on Instagram or hit me up and say hi on my Facebook page or Twitter account. I’ll definitely respond and I look forward to meeting you!
